What time is it?
Time for another adventure with our favorite gender-swapped heroes, Fionna and Cake!
For those that don’t know, Fionna and Cake exist in Ice King’s fan fiction. In fact, all of his fanfic include gender-swapped versions of all our favorite characters. In reality, Fionna and Cake began as a webcomic created by Adventure Time character artist, Natasha Allegri. She is a fantastically talented individual. You should look her up. After reading this review, of course.
This time, Lumpy Space Princess tries her hand at writing a Fionna and Cake tale. She’s kidnapped the Ice King, tied him up in the woods and is forcing him to read her story so he can breathe life into the characters. Fionna and Cake play secondary roles to Lumpy Space Prince, the male version of LSP, who is the actual star of this episode. Lumpy Space Prince wishes to escape the control of his parents, who want him to become a monster, so he runs away. With the help of a, um, “tesseract frog”, I guess, Lumpy appears in Ooo and recruits some forest animals to assist him in procuring some sweet stuff and new servants. Fionna and Cake show up to free his prisoners. Male LSP is inspired by Fionna’s disinterest in him. “Not caring” could be the key to Lumpy’s happiness.
Seriously, Lumpy Space Princess is the most narcissistic character in Adventure Time. Her fanfic, male counterpart is even worse. His every action is insulting and harmful but he is completely oblivious. It’s fantastic!
It’s the danger we all face when we consider our own stories. We’re our own heroes, after all. All of us are stuck inside our own heads without the true capacity to accept others as anything but our sidekicks or perhaps co-stars in the most ideal situations. We try to put a good face on it but we are just as narcissistic as Lumpy Space Princess. This episode works so beautifully because it’s truth. Our truth.
Lumpy’s parents, in full-on monster form, catch up to him in Ooo via the same frog. Lumpy defeats them with apathy.
Of course he does.
Back in the real world (kinda), our one true Lumpy Space Princess mouths the words alongside Ice King as he finishes her story. The climax, she writes, is enough to bring Lumpy Space Prince from fanfic to reality. As it happens when most of us try to bring our fantasies to life, the result isn’t the perfection we expect but turns out to be a rabid possum that crawls up our legs to chew on our genitals.
Or maybe that’s just me.
