Ad Astra is more art film than thriller, more father-son reclamation than sci-fi, and more a drifting homage to Apocalypse Now in Space than something that can stand on its own merits.
How did they know how to be so precise? The stolen photos couldn't have told so much, but that doesn't matter as much as how devastating the gestures become.
It won't hurt to approach this movie with the enthusiasm of a 10 year old boy who couldn't wait to watch the next summer action spectacle. If you do so, just try your best to stomach the gushy kiss scenes.
