Lost in Translation 482: Examining Recent Trailers

Two new trailers dropped that are of interest to Lost in Translation. The first is the Spaceballs 2 teaser trailer, featuring Mel Brooks.

The Schwarz returns 2027.

News of casting is also coming out. Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are returning as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet with Brooks reprising his role as Yogurt. Joining the cast are Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman, Bill’s son. The movie will mark the first time Moranis has been in a film since his retirement from acting in 1997 to take care of his children after his wife passed away.

The scrolling text in the teaser points out how many science fiction movies became franchises since the original Spaceballs in 1987, including two franchises crossing over more than once. By the time of The Search for More Money’s release, it will have been forty years since the original hit theatres, despite the movie’s popularity. Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, Predator, Jurassic Park, all have had films and the first two have had multiple TV series with various levels of success. The scroll makes the point that studios are playing it safe by sticking to franchises. Spaceballs 2 is going to have a massive audience on opening day, because there hasn’t been any Spaceballs in a while. It will, however, still be a sequel.

Details about The Search for More Money are lean. The studio is keeping their cards close to their chest. The proof will be released in two years. Getting Brooks, Pullman, and Moranis on board does indicate that the forty years since the original will be worth the wait.

The other recent trailer is the full one for The Naked Gun with Liam Neeson. Unlike the teaser trailer looked at back in April, which seemed to be the the pre-credits scene for the new movie, the new trailer includes details through out the film

The new trailer shows some of the original humour as seen in Police Squad. The “Please take a chair,” bit would fit in the original Police Squad. Neeson even looks to be spoofing his role in the Taken series. There’s some toilet humour, but Leslie Nielsen was known for his love of fart jokes and his use of whoopee cushions on set. The labeling on the doors to Police Squad is “wrong” in the correct way. The potential is there. Neeson’s performance is what will sell the film as a Police Squad/Naked Gun movie.
