The rest of the episode was slightly better, because it focused on the one romantic bright spot of recent seasons, the surprisingly hot love affair between Bonnie and Enzo.
The symphony of sadness that has characterized this season continues in the finale, turning up the dire consequences of every decision made into a crescendo of loss, missed connections and despair.
Some good decisions, mostly to reinvest thoughtfully in references to season one (even as the tone has markedly changed for season two) pay off this week.
Ultimately, the film settles for being one of those British apocalypse tales about the inevitable demise of the Empire, down to a drowned world scene near the end of the film.
