Big Eyes Smart Mouth: Kyosogiga

Serdar Yegulalp
July 25, 2018
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
I suspect most people's first encounter with Kyōsōgiga is going to be much like mine: first you're confused and frustrated, then you're fascinated, and then finally you're even a little bit moved and awed.

The Xeno File: Bakumatsu Taiyōden / Sun In The Last Days Of The Shogunate

Serdar Yegulalp
July 11, 2018
The Xeno File
Yūzō Kawashima's Bakumatsu Taiyōden starts and ends as effortless entertainment, a breezy and bracing comedy exuding endless energy.

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: A Silent Voice

Serdar Yegulalp
July 4, 2018
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
A gorgeous adaptation of the acclaimed manga, and a story with a hard moral question: Who gets to be redeemed?

The Xeno File: The Man Who Stole the Sun (1979)

Serdar Yegulalp
June 27, 2018
The Xeno File
Almost forty years later, this jet-black comedy about a one-man nuclear terrorist ring remains an absurdist masterwork

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: Like The Clouds, Like The Wind

Serdar Yegulalp
June 20, 2018
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
But there's more to Like The Clouds, Like The Wind than nostalgia or cross-references; it's a fine project in its own right.

The Xeno File: Mishima – A Life in Four Chapters (1985)

Serdar Yegulalp
June 6, 2018
The Xeno File
Paul Schrader's 1985 film Mishima, co-funded by George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, uses both the man's literary art and public theater to bring us to him from the inside out.

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: Mary and the Witch’s Flower

Serdar Yegulalp
May 30, 2018
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
The freshman effort from ex-Ghibli creators Studio Ponoc at first seems like a riff on 'Kiki's Delivery Service' or 'Harry Potter' territory, but has morality rather than magic on its mind.

Liquid Sky (1982)

Serdar Yegulalp
May 4, 2018
Classic Film/New Blu
Many of the other strategies Liquid Sky used to be confrontational and novel have aged, some better than others.

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: After the Rain

Serdar Yegulalp
April 25, 2018
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
But After the Rain, from Jun Mayuzuki's manga of the same name, isn't about romance, but something subtler and harder to come by.

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: The Life of Budori Gusuko

Serdar Yegulalp
April 13, 2018
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
What I can't complain about, and what makes the movie absolutely worth seeing anyway, is just about everything else in it.

The Xeno File: Blade of the Immortal (2018)

Serdar Yegulalp
April 6, 2018
The Xeno File
I never believed anyone other than Takashi Miike deserved to adapt Hiroaki Samura's raucous, blood-drenched manga Blade Of The Immortal into a live-action film,

The Xeno File: Ichi the Killer (2001)

Serdar Yegulalp
March 23, 2018
The Xeno File
I approach Ichi The Killer in the way I would a friend who once did some pretty stupid things in high school.

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: Napping Princess

Serdar Yegulalp
March 14, 2018
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
Napping Princess feels like too much and too little at the same time.

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: Perfect Blue

Serdar Yegulalp
February 28, 2018
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
A movie this good, there's always another layer to unwrap.

The Xeno File: THE LIFT (1983)

Serdar Yegulalp
February 21, 2018
The Xeno File
"Take the stairs, take the stairs, for god's sake take the stairs!!" begged the tagline on the posters for the Dutch cult movie The Lift.

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: Land of the Lustrous

Serdar Yegulalp
February 7, 2018
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
Lustrous's microcosm is a crescent-shaped island somewhere out in the middle of an apparently endless ocean.

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: Haibane Renmei

Serdar Yegulalp
November 15, 2017
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
Like Wings of Desire, 2001, Night On The Galactic Railroad, or any of the other great works about man's place in the universe, Haibane Renmei inspires more reflection than certainty.

The Xeno File: VIOLENT COP (1989)

Serdar Yegulalp
November 8, 2017
Movies, Reviews, The Xeno File
The key to Violent Cop is not in the violent moments, but the moments where Detective Azuma (Takeshi Kitano, a/k/a Beat Takeshi) just stands there.

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: Kaiba

Serdar Yegulalp
November 1, 2017
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
Kaiba is set in a universe that has what I could describe as an alternate ecology.

Big Eyes Smart Mouth: Neo Yokio

Serdar Yegulalp
October 18, 2017
Big Eyes Smart Mouth
It's not good, to be sure -- but maybe being its own special kind of bad is more valuable than we think.

Star Trek Discovery 2.01 “Brother”
She's also on a command training path, so that should tighten things up a bit when needed, and she was both soft and hard core in the Short Trek with the stowaway she found. That struck a good...

Star Trek Discovery 2.01 “Brother”
She was... energetic and bubbly. I think that'll tone down a bit as the season goes on. Agreed on Jet Reno. She was awesome. Exactly the sort of energy this show needs. Good to hear from you, man!!

Star Trek Discovery 2.01 “Brother”
I felt Tilly was a bit over the top in this episode, and worry she is becoming a caricature of herself. I hope they give her more depth and less one-liners. Really liked the Jet Reno character so far....
